Dec 1 2016....well I'm pretty sure that I have watched this before, or maybe I read the book? Anyway, what a childhood! I can't believe he survived. Yuck, the rain and the running sewer, and the people dying all around him. I know I listened to the book Teacher Man on audio book and I loved his voice. I will have to read this book (again?!) Note: this is not a story to put you in a happy mood!

This defines the word 'bleak'. Stuck in traffic? Your boss is a jerk? Stop complaining. You could've had this young man's life, where emptying a chamber pot is the highlight of your day.

It was so real it reminded me of my early years growing up in a working class area of England just after the War, not so long ago. Not as poverty-stricken as this materially but the culture - the vivid extremes of love and violence and abuse, the ever-presence of escape through alcohol, the power of judgmental religious attitudes, just the sheer intensity of it all were captured so well in the movie. Such a sweet sensitive child and his family, makes one wonder how they could have survived without terrible scars. Wonderful movie.

Very well done movie. A pleasure to watch. I would recommend this movie for all to see. No fast forwarding on this one. No falling asleep on this DVD!!!!!

Poor Irish a short, rough life. I enjoyed the portrayal of what it was like to be poor in a different time. Is it bad of me to enjoy watching the suffering of others? Acting was good and pacing was acceptable. Things seem to have improved, although not everywhere. A pretty good case for food stamps.

Actually a movie that may become a classic over time...just seeing his face again makes me relive it!

A very moving story - we don't appreciate what we have now.

Very compelling movie. It demonstrates just how far the Celtic Tiger has come in the last 50 years.
