A typical Rankin novel with his star Rebus sent back to 'remedial' training with some potential 'dirty' cops, all with their own secrets. The old case they have been given to solve links to another case DS Siobhan Clarke is working on back in headquarters where Rebus usually works.
Ultimately the two cases make for a lot of characters, a densely complicated plot with lots of twists and counter twists. Despite this it good read but somewhat slow at times.
Another very good book by Rankin. Rebus is such a well-built fictional character that it's easy to forget he's not real. I also enjoyed the more involved role that the newly promoted Detective Sargent Siobhan Clarke played in this book
