The beauty of this production is it takes a small-minded, humourless and not very bright man, and makes you care about him and his family. Originally a series in the humourous (well, that's debatable) magazine Punch, it's been adapted by screenwriter Andrew Davies and beautifully performed by Hugh Bonneville. Watching Bonneville go through all manner of life's vicissitudes really brings home what a well-trained, proper actor can do. Sweet, but subtle. Those looking for out and out guffaws will be disappointed. But stay with it till the end and you'll realize you get a lot of (Victorian) social history in there. And very realistic characters you end up rooting for.

"Diary of a nobody" represents just what is wrong with what is called 'British humor'. It's damn boring business listening for the punch line. I can see these little vignettes or skits or whatever you want to call them try to develop into something that I can appreciate and laugh at. I think the problem is that the British just don't know how to let themselves go and laugh their heads off. Most of this DVD was too tame for me.

Was very pleasantly surprised by this EXCELLENT one-man production of this should be better known book.

Captured the charter, and the times, perfectly.
