Though it shares a title and some basic ideas (cop corruption, drugs and violence), this is hardly a remake of Abel Ferrara's guilt-ridden crime film of 1992 starring Harvey Keitel. Director/madman Werner Herzog claimed he'd never seen it or heard of Ferrara, but that could've been a stunt. The questions with a movie like this is does it know what it's doing or is it really just bad? It walks a fine line, although when the iguanas show up, you'll probably think that the whole movie is just a sick, fever dream joke, anchored by a gonzo, go for broke performance by Nic Cage. The story doesn't really make much sense and it's disappointing if you're a fan of Herzog, but it has it's share of batpoop crazy moments and a decent supporting cast, including Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer, Brad Dourif, Michael Shannon and Shea Whigham, who looks like a young Michael Douglas. It ends with the immortal question "Do fish dream?"
